Inside Copper Jettys: a galley kitchen and six casino tables

Copper Jettys keeps six card tables above the old jetty offices on Wilson Street, Burnie. A house dealer runs every one, and there's nothing to play anywhere but here, in person. Buy chips at the counter and they only ever count points: no wagering, no cash prizes, no poker machines on the floor, and nothing about the night leaves the building. Just cards, coffee and a pot of tea, the way the room has always run.

Take a seat among six tables

The timber front of 52 Wilson Street as the evening lamps come on

Six tables fill the old jetty office at 52 Wilson Street, laid out much as they were on the first night Copper Jettys opened: green felt, a house dealer at each, and cards running from six o'clock, Wednesday through Sunday.

There's no website game and no app to open before you come — just walk in, take whichever seat is free, and order a coffee or a pot of tea from the counter while you wait for the next hand.

Six tables

Room for five hundred, euchre, crib and more, most open nights.

A dealer for you

Sit down and someone else banks the game — that part's never yours.

The kitchen runs independently of the card tables — a short menu, cooked fresh each evening by the water.

For dinner: seafood chowder, then fish and chips off the jetty catch.

For dessert, lemon tart. A table for dinner only is booked separately from the cards.

House rules

Know the house rules first

  1. You'll need to be 18 or over, and a house dealer may ask for ID at any table.
  2. Buy your chips at the counter — they only ever count points, never cash, here or anywhere else.
  3. There's no online play of any kind: no app, no website game, nothing beyond this room.
  4. Dress how you like within reason; thongs and singlets are the one thing we'll ask you to save for another night.
  5. Settle any disagreement with the house dealer, not with each other — that's what they're there for.
Inside the room

Sit anywhere in the casino — a dealer runs every hand

A table laid with chips, waiting on the first hand of the night

Choose any of the six tables and a house dealer takes it from there; nobody has to bank a game or keep their own score.

Tables seat up to eight for five hundred or euchre, and as few as four for crib or rummy, depending on what's called for that night.

It's cards only on this floor: nothing electronic, nothing that lights up, and nothing that takes a coin.

Five hundred

Burnie's favourite; room for late arrivals most Wednesdays.

Euchre and bridge

Both on the felt Friday nights, two tables apiece.

Crib, canasta and rummy

Smaller tables through the week, plus Saturday's overflow.

Before you visit

Ask us before your first visit

What should I bring on my first visit?

Just yourself and some ID — chips are bought at the counter, and a house dealer will show you to a seat.

Do I need to book a table?

Not usually — walk in most nights. For six or more, call ahead so a table can be held for you.

Where do I sit if I don't know anyone?

Tell the house dealer you're new and they'll find you a chair — nobody sits out for long.

Can I play for money?

No. Chips only ever count points, and there's no wagering or cash prize anywhere in the room.

Is there an app or website game?

No. Everything at Copper Jettys happens in person, at this address — there's nothing to play online.

Do you have poker machines?

No pokies and no gaming machines of any kind — this is a card room, not a gaming floor.

What if I've never played five hundred before?

Say so at the table. The house dealer will walk you through a hand before it counts.

A note from the house

Read this before you walk in

BurnieWilson Street, portside

Dear visitor, the lamps go on over six felt tables from six o'clock, Wednesday to Sunday.

Bring whoever you like — a pair, a table of four, or a whole crew for five hundred.

Chips are bought at the counter and only ever count points; nothing here carries a cash value.

Questions go to the house dealer, not a website — we're not online and don't plan to be.

Nothing formal — just what regulars are told on a first night at Copper Jettys, more or less in their own words.
